Think Ahead: RN Summer Internship Program

Stevens Community Medical Center is offering a wonderful opportunity for the right candidate who is preparing for a career in nursing.  You will experience firsthand what it’s like to work for our outstanding rural organization.

The Summer Internship Program provides clinical experience for nursing students, critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.  You will be paired with a Registered Nurse mentor.  A comprehensive clinical experience in medical, surgical, emergency, and obstetric settings will be provided.

This 10 week paid internship program is open to active students enrolled in a Baccalaureate Degree nursing program between Junior and Senior year.  Program duration is June 2018 and is completed in August 2018.  

 

Program Objectives & Goals

This experience is meant to ensure quality nursing care for patients and to promote professional nursing practices.  The students will be able to:

  1. Collect subjective and objective assessment data to be reviewed and used by their mentor.

  2. Assist in the developing, implementing and evaluating of care for assigned patients.

  3. Assist Mentor in the performing the following procedures:

    1. Administration of oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenous  medications

    2. IV insertion

    3. Monitoring IV sites, dressings, and rates

    4. Non-medicated IV’s including tubing changes

    5. Changing of TPN bags

    6. Dressing changes

    7. Nasogastric tube insertion and care

    8. Urinary catheter insertion and care

    9. Oral, endotracheal, and tracheal suctioning

    10. Bowel elimination care

    11. Specimen collection

    12. Documentation of care provided

    13. SBAR bedside shift report

  4. Show regard for dignity and respect of patients, family members, visitors and co-workers.

  5. Participate in maintaining a healthy work environment.

 

Requirements

To participate in the Summer Internship Program you must meet the following criteria:

  • Students that are in good standing and enrolled in a Baccalaureate Degree nursing program between Junior and Senior year are eligible

  • Meet all of Stevens Community Medical Center job –related health requirements

  • Provide proof of current CPR certification

  • Complete the SCMC application process

  • Receive acceptable evaluations from your references

Program Dates:  

    June 2018 to August 2018 (specific dates TBD)

Orientation:

    Orientation to familiarize students with hospital and nursing information will be provided.

Work Schedule:

    The student will work a full-time schedule 36-40 hours per week; on-call shifts are included in these hours.  Rotating shifts:  Days, Evenings, Nights and Weekends. You will be expected to work your preceptor’s schedule.

Salary:

    Hourly wage is $12.00

Uniforms:

    Students will be expected to purchase their own uniforms.

Continuing Education:

    Students are encouraged to attend staff meetings and education programs available during the Summer Internship Program experience.

Request for Time off:

    In order to receive the full clinical benefit of the program, we encourage students to plan special events before or after the Summer Internship Program experience.
