March is National Nutrition Month® | Tip: Good Carbs

Throughout the month of March we will be covering topics on nutrition. According to http://www.eatright.org/ National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. "Go Further with Food" is the theme for 2018.

Nutrition Tip: Good Carbs

Not all carbs are bad. Whole grains contain fiber, which helps with weight loss, keeps us feeling full, and has been shown to lower cholesterol. Choose whole grain cereals, breads, crackers, and brown rice.

Nutrition Services at SCMC:

Alyssa Thooft, RD, LD is a licensed and registered dietitian. She has been at SCMC for just under 4 years and continues to grow and expand her specialty. A dietitian is trained to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy for prevention and treatment of disease through diet. A dietitian can develop an individualized plan for patients to help them reach their health goals. Alyssa is also certified as a lactation educator. Patients can be seen with or without a doctor’s referral and many insurance companies cover this service.
